FFMI Calculator

See How Your Muscle Compares With Natural Levels

Enter your height, weight, and body fat to get your FFMI, a clear rating, and how much lean mass sits between you and the next level.

This tool was built by Serge (MSc) using the standard fat-free mass index formula with the usual height adjustment. My background is a lifelong natural lifter with over a decade of drug-free training and a science background (MSc).

My tools are for educational purposes and give practical guidance, not professional advice.

Body weight cannot tell muscle from fat, and that is the whole problem with chasing a number on the scale. The fat-free mass index fixes this by measuring your lean mass against your height, so a tall lifter and a short one can be compared fairly.

You will need a body fat estimate. If you do not have one yet, the body fat percentage calculator gives you one with a tape measure.

Why I Use FFMI Over Body Weight

I use FFMI when I want to see how much muscle I carry for my height, because weight alone hides it. Two lifters at the same weight can be very different people once fat is taken out of the picture.

I recommend it with a warning, though. It is a guide to your progress and not a scoreboard, and it only works as well as your body fat estimate.

Reading the Numbers Without Obsessing

Most untrained adults sit between 18 and 20, and years of steady lifting can carry a person into the low 20s. Every point above that gets harder to earn, which is why the scale on the bar above is stretched toward the top.

Because a few percentage points of error in body fat can move the result by about a point, check your measurement method before you trust a small change. Compare like with like, in the same way, over several months.

About the Natural Range

A well-known study of male athletes (Kouri et al., 1995) found that those who did not use steroids reached an adjusted FFMI of around 25 at most, while higher values were seen mainly in users. That is why 25 is often used as a rough upper marker.

It is a guide drawn from one group, not a rule for every body. Genetics, training age, and measurement error all matter, so treat the marker as context, not a judgment.

Building More Muscle From Here

Raising your FFMI comes down to steady training and enough fuel. The progressive overload calculator helps you add weight at the right time, and the protein intake calculator sets a daily range to support growth.

If you are just starting, my Natural Beginner's Muscle Blueprint gives you a 12-week plan built on exactly that approach.

Educational tool only. FFMI is an estimate that depends on your body fat figure, and it is not a medical assessment or a test of whether anyone is natural. The adjusted formula follows common use, and the natural range reference is Kouri et al., Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine (1995). It is designed for healthy adults.
