Plate Loading Calculator

Plate Loading Calculator

This tool was built by Serge (MSc) using standard barbell and plate weights. My background is a lifelong natural lifter with over a decade of drug-free training and a science background (MSc). My tools are for educational purposes and give practical guidance, not professional advice.

Working out which plates to load can slow you down between sets, especially with odd numbers. Enter the total weight you want on the bar and this tool shows you exactly which plates to put on each side. It supports kilograms and pounds, and you can match it to the plates you own so it never suggests a plate you do not have.

PlatePer side

How This Works

The tool takes your target weight, subtracts the bar, and splits the rest evenly between the two sides. It then works from the heaviest plate down, fitting as many of each as it can on one side. This matches how you load a bar in the gym, big plates first, then smaller ones to fine-tune the weight.

Understanding Your Result

The result shows the plates for one side of the bar. Load the same on the other side to reach your target. If a small amount is left over, it means your plate set cannot hit that exact weight, so pick the nearest number you can load. Using smaller plates like 1.25 kg or 2.5 lb lets you make finer jumps.

Important Note

This tool assumes a standard set of plates and a matched pair on each side. If you use a specialty bar or fractional plates, adjust the bar weight field to match your setup. Always load plates evenly and use collars so the weight stays balanced.
